Tools and Materials Needed
- Latex cream base coat
- stout beer
- Burnt umber powder pigment
- Rubbing alcohol
- Mixing spoon
- 2-inch paint brush
- Soft cotton rags
- Badger-hair softening brush
- Thin, pointed artist brush
- Spray varnish
- 1-inch artist brush
Getting Started
- Paint the cupboard doors with 2 coats cream paint. Let dry for 4 hours.
- Mix the coloured glaze: 3/4 cup beer, 1/2 cup alcohol and stir in 1 tablespoon burnt umber powder pigment. Swirl the glaze on with the paint brush or with a rag. You want a soft, mottled, circular effect. Let dry.
- Using your 1-inch artist's brush and a rag, create circular lines over the base glaze. Make irregular circles and dots over the top. You are adding another layer and building a more intense effect.
- Dip your smallest artist's brush in the glaze and make a tiny, circular grain, following the lines that are formed on the layers before. Add little dots around the lines to make the bird's eye. None of the lines should be straight. Roll the brush around on the surface.
- Let dry and spray with several coats of spray varnish
