Tools and Materials Needed

Getting Started

  1. Lightly sand and thoroughly wash the countertop. Tape the wall surrounding the countertop with low-tack tape to protect it from the paint.
  2. Give the counter 2 coats of white melamine paint, letting it dry properly in between coats.
  3. With a sea sponge, dab on the black paint, then the brown paint, then a bit of white, and alternate back and forth (each colour with its own sea sponge) until you get the effect you are looking for. You want to cover the entire surface, and see little specks of each colour to replicate the look of granite.
  4. Let it dry thoroughly for a couple of days.
  5. Melamine paint is designed as a top coat so it does not need a varnish. It should last for a while, especially if there is not a lot of traffic. Like anything else, though, the more it gets banged and knocked, the more quickly it could chip off.
