Getting Started

Recipe: 1 part latex paint, 2 to 3 parts water-based glazing liquid.

  1. When painting real wood paneling, there are always knots that must be filled before painting. Use wood filler and let dry thoroughly. Sand smooth
  2. Prime the walls with a good quality alkyd or shellac-based primer to seal the wood. Wear a mask, especially in a room without good ventilation.
  3. Basecoat the walls with 1 coat of white latex paint. Let dry.

Glaze ratio: 1 part latex glazing liquid:1 part mint green latex paint.

  4. Keep the pot of water and the mixed glaze next to each other. Use a stiff-bristled 3-inch brush and scrunch up a nice smooth cotton rag. Dip the brush into the glaze, and then dip it into the water.
  5. Because this technique was done on wood paneling, there are grooves forming natural vertical stripes all along the wall. These grooves are about an inch wide. Paint two panels, going over the groove, then leave the next groove white. Then paint the next two panels, going over its middle groove, and then leave the next groove white, and so on around the room.
  6. The mint green paint should be applied in a strie-like fashion. Paint from top to bottom in long straight lines.

Glaze ratio: 1 part latex glazing liquid:1 part pale grey latex paint.

  7. When the green paint has dried, mix a pale grey glaze. Dip a 1-inch foam brush into the glaze and then fill in the grooves left white on the wall. Wipe the excess off the foam brush, and then go back over the grey stripe to distress it and remove the excess in the cracks. This will make it appear as a shadow on the wall. Let dry.
