Materials and Tools
- Rubber or latex kitchen gloves
- Cleaning sponge
- Heavy-duty cleanser such as TSP
- Lint-free cloths
- Sandpaper or sanding block
- High-adhesive primer
- Low-pile rollers and paint trays
- Oil or latex paint
- Acrylic varnish
- Varnish brush or foam brush
Getting started
Wearing gloves, use the sponge and cleanser to remove grease, dirt, and mildew from the tiles. Rinse and dry them with a lint-free cloth. Then go over the tiles with sandpaper or a sanding block to rough up the surface. Wipe off the sanding dust.
- Apply a coat of high-adhesive primer, making sure to cover all the grout and tile. Let the primer and cure overnight
- Roll on the paint. Two coats is best, allowing the first coat to dry before applying the second. Apply two coats of varnish to seal and protect
