Getting Started

The flat veneer desk was ideal for a pin stripe makeover. The piece you are painting in effect should be as smooth and plain as possible, with no ornamentation. All you need is two coats of a dark color, one used in men's pinstriped suits, such as navy, gray, or black. Once dry, apply the fine white pinstripes with a ruler and sharp chalk pencil. To seal in the chalk, the surface must be sprayed with clear varnish

  1. Sand the desktop and it clean with a tack cloth. Pour some primer into the mixing container and add a bit of black paint to tint it to gray. Apply the primer and let dry.
  2. Apply 2 coats of black paint. For solid coverage with dark colors you may need to add a third coat. Let dry for 4 hours
  3. Mark off 2" stripes along the width of the desktop. With dressmaker's chalk and a long ruler, draw out the pinstripes
  4. You must use spray varnish to protect your work, as brushing over the chalk lines will blur or erase them. Always wear a mask when spraying, and work in well-ventilated area
