Tools and Materials Needed

Several paint companies manufacture textured paint designed to create a more tactile surface than traditional paint. You can make your own by adding an 8 oz bag of silicone sand to a gallon of latex paint. Mix extremely well and apply with a roller or brush. The effect looks and feels like soft suede.

Getting Started

  1. Apply two coats of the dark brown basecoat and let dry for four hours, or overnight.
  2. Measure and mark off a grid that fits your wall measurements. Use the chalk line first, and then check your work with the spirit level. Our thin rectangles are 14" x 25" and the larger boxes are 25" x 50".
  3. Cover the chalk lines with the one-inch low-tack tape. Press the edges down firmly.
  4. Fill in the long thin rectangles with the cream paint. Let dry.
  5. Fill in the large boxes with suede paint. Let dry.
  6. Remove the tape carefully, revealing the dark basecoat as the thin stripes.
