Tools And Materials Needed

Getting Started

  1. Collect wine crates from your local liquor store. As with the coffee bean bags, some will give them to you, some won't want to part with them, and others will charge you. It takes persistence and patience.
  2. Take crates apart carefully, and place them on the tabletop to map out a pattern. You may need to use a jigsaw to cut the pieces to size so as to fit properly.
  3. Apply wood glue to the back of the boards, push them down onto the table. Hammer small nails into each corner of the boards to hold them down properly. Let dry over night, put the table on its side, then do the next side.
  4. Repeat until all the sides are done.
  5. Mix a bit of ochre colour pigment into glossy oil-based varnish, and apply one coat over the top of the wood to give it a richer, warmer colour.
  6. Add a piece of old rope to each side of the table. Nail it down.
  7. Apply 2-3 more coats of clear oil-based glossy varnish.
