I receive many, many, many emails and requests from people who want to turn their passion for design and decorating into a career. In fact, to be a designer is one of the top three job requests for young people today! Part of this can be thanks to all the design shows that have made designers 'the new rocks stars'. How do you make this 'dream job' a reality? What do you need in the form of qualifications to make it happen?
Before you get started, a major question you need to ask yourself is "Do I want to be a designer or a decorator?"
In simple terms, a decorator applies finishes - colours, paints, wallpaper, fabrics, furniture, etc. A designer deals with the interpretation of the room or space in terms of quality of environment. A designer breaks a space down and looks at it in terms of things such as building codes and environmental issues to come up with the best practical and aesthetically pleasing design.
