Our basement family room has one east facing window and is approximate 300 sq. ft. We are having trouble picking a new colour that will brighten the room. Any tips for choosing a basement colour?

We created a great basement transformation on one of our Facelift episodes.
To create a brighter space from an often darker solemn basement feel, use fresh lively colors. Colors like retro tangerine orange and rasberry red give off an invigorating beat to the surroundings.
When using these types of colors, use with a sheen to reflect light. Reflection and sheen will always produce the illusion of space.
Finally for lighting, pot lighting in the ceiling works wonderfully in a basement.
