I picked out a green color for my baby's nursery, but it has turned out to be quite a bright color. What do I need to add to soften the brightness?

I have designed a nursery with the most comforting gingham pattern painted on the walls. The instructions are for painting green over white, but you can simply reverse that and apply large white stripes. This will soften the green and it's charming paint finish that will last for years.
