Tools & Materials Needed:
  • Wood filler (optional)
  • Medium-grade sandpaper
  • Lint-free cloths
  • High-adhesive primer
  • Low-pile rollers and paint trays
  • Red and black latex paint, low sheen
  • 2 ½ inch paintbrush
  • Satin acrylic varnish
  • Varnish brush or foam brush
Instructions
Step 1. (Shot 1) Repair any small cracks, nail holes, or screw holes (if you are changing the position of the hardware) with wood filler. Let it dry and then sand flush with the surface. Sand the surface to rough it up. Wipe off the sanding dust.

Step 2. (Shot 2) Apply a coat of primer and let it dry for 4 hours.

Step 3. (Shot 3) Roll on two coats of the red paint for complete coverage, allowing the first coat to dry before you apply the second coat.

Step 4. (Shot 4) Dip the paintbrush into the black paint and remove most of the excess onto a rag. Dry-brush the black paint over the surface lightly. Build up the colour, going into the indentations of the molding.

Step 5. (Shot 5) Use a damp rag to wipe most of the black from the indentations, as well as some from areas on the door that would be naturally worn, to reveal the red base coat.

Step 6. Apply one coat of varnish for protection.
