Tools & Materials Needed:
  • Primer
  • Burgundy latex paint, satin (or your color of choice)
  • Mixing bucket Paint tray and rollers
  • Ruler and chalk
  • Weighted chalk line (plumb line)
  • Low tack painter's tape
  • Water-based varnish, semi or high gloss
  • 3" varnish brush or roller
  • OR high-glass latex paint in the same color
Instructions
Step 1. Tint the primer by adding a little burgundy paint. This will make it easier to get good coverage with the dark paint color. Apply the tinted primer to the walls and let dry.

Step 2. (Shot 1) Apply at least two coats of satin sheen burgundy paint to the walls. With dark colours it is sometimes necessary to add a third coat.

Step 3. (Shot 2) Divide the walls into stripes, ours are 12" wide. Mark every 12" along the top of the walls with chalk, and use a weighted chalk line to mark off the stripes. Tape off alternate stripes to be varnished. Run the tape along the outside of the stripe to be varnished. When you have finished taping, you will have thin and thick stripes. Apply the varnish to the thick stripes. It goes on milky and dries clear. Remove the tape and let dry.
