Tools & Materials Needed:
  • Design
  • Graph paper
  • Pencil Ruler
  • Roll of craft paper
  • X-acto knife
  • Low-tack painter’s tape
  • Non-water-soluble colored pencils (we used brown, black, bronze, dark red, and gray)
  • Pencil sharpener
  • Eraser
  • Matte spray varnish
  • Face mask
Instructions
Step 1. (Shot 1) To make the template for your design, first trace or draw it free hand onto a piece of graph paper.

Step 2. (Shot 2) To increase the picture on the right proportion for your wall, draw a large grid on the craft paper and transfer the design to scale.

Step 3. Use the X-acto knife to cut tiny slits along the lines of the design.

Step 4. (Shot 3) Tape the craft paper into position on the wall. Draw light pencil marks through the slits you made with the knife around the design.

Step 5. Remove the paper and connect the pencil marks to complete the picture on the wall.

Step 6. (Shot 4) Color in the design with the colored pencils. Hold the pencils as you would normally for writing. Using the pencil tip, scribble back and forth lightly so that you don’t get obvious lines. Pencil in the areas you want shaded with more scribbles, but don’t press down any harder. Sharpen the tip periodically and remove any mistakes with an eraser.

Step 7. Apply a coat of spray varnish in the same sheen as basecoat to protect your work. Brushing varnish over the colored pencil, even though it is non-water-soluble, may cause it to blur. Always wear a mask when using spray varnish and work in a well-ventiled area.
