Instructions
Note: If you are staining a new, raw wood floor, sand the surface first to open the wood's pores so that it will take the stain evenly.
Step 1. (Shot 1) Pour some mahogany stain into a mixing container. Wearing gloves, dip a folded rag into the stain and apply it to the floor boards. Start in the corner furthest from the doorway. Work in sections, applying the stain to cover the surface completely, and then going back to wipe off the excess. Wipe in the direction of the grain. Leave the floor over night to dry completely.
Step 2. (Shot 2) Our dark borders are 9" wide and 1 1/4" wide. Measure in from the wall, draw a pencil line as a guide, and then mark off the border sections with tape. Press the tape down hard all along the edges and in the grooves between the planks. To keep the dark stain from bleeding under the tape, place a metal ruler along the edge of the tape and score the line with the X-acto knife.
Step 3. (Shot 3) Lay down a drop cloth to protect the rest of the floor from spatters, as stain is impossible to remove. Using a fresh clean folded rag, apply the dark brown stain to the border stripes as in step 1. Let dry.
Step 4. (Shot 4) Remove the tape. Apply four coats of clear acrylic varnish for protection. Leave the floor to cure for 4 or 5 days, depending on the heat and humidity, before moving furniture back.
