GINGHAM WALLS

Tools & Materials Needed:

• Bright off-white and light green latex paint, satin
• Roller and paint tray
• Measuring tape
• Pencil
• Chalk line
• Low-tack painter's tape
• Water-based glazing liquid
• Mixing container
• Stiff bristle brush

Recipe

• 1 part latex paint
• 3 parts water-based glazing liquid
• 1 part water

 

Instructions

Step 1. Apply two base coats of white and let dry overnight.

Step 2. (Shot 1) Decide on the width of your gingham stripes and mark off the horizontal lines with the chalk line. Our stripes are 10 inches wide.

Step 3. (Shot 2) You will be painting alternate stripes, so tape off on the outside of the stripes to be painted. When you are finished taping, they will look wider. If it helps, tape an X on the stripes not to be painted -- the thinner stripes.

Mix the green coloured glaze according to the recipe. Roll the colored glaze onto alternate stripes.

Step 4. (Shot 3) Using a stiff bristle brush, drag along the length of the painted stripe, horizontally only, to give the effect of a cloth weave. Go over it a couple of times, brushing and blending out any harsh marks. Let dry overnight.

Step 5. (Shot 4) Mark off vertical stripes the same width as the horizontal stripes.

Step 6. (Shot 5) Fill in alternate vertical stripes as you did for the horizontal stripes. This time drag the bristle brush through vertically.
