The details; art, photos, fabrics and accessories make a room truly yours.

A special three-year-old I know loves to take me into her bedroom and show me her treasures.

They include “best ever books” stacked helter skelter around the reading rug and her tickle trunk with dress-up costumes spilling out the sides.

A handmade quilt and night light from Grammie keep away the spookies and a dollhouse is the inspiration for hours of stories and games.

These are the things that make up Olivia’s personal world.

We are all collectors, taking great pleasure in artifacts, photos and the beautiful gifts that hold memories and lift our spirits.

An important part of decorating is including the details of our lives, whether they are practical pieces or things to admire, touch and enjoy.

How do you make a room personal without overdoing it or making it look too cluttered?

The most successful vignettes look casually put together but some planning is behind the creation of a pleasing scene that invites the eye to linger.

Balance is crucial to let objects or furnishings breathe on their own as well as mingle.

Take, for example, the living room vignette shown that’s from Charles Faudree Details, a book by designer and author Charles Faudree with Francesanne Tucker, with stunning photos by Jenifer Jordan.

The woodsy locale of the homeowners’ cabin inspired the fanciful theme.

The wildflowers and wildlife depicted in embroidered and appliqued pillows produce a charming centrepiece layered on the sofa.

The quiet boat painting, the shell box and pale watery colour scheme relate directly to the lakeside environment.

Faudree advises to experiment in order to decide what goes together and what doesn’t. Your eye will tell you if the grouping is balanced and pleasing.

For mantels, Faudree reminds us that fireplaces make a strong decorative statement even before they are embellished.

This natural focal point should be carefully enhanced with candelabra, a fascinating clock, silver, crystal or fine porcelain urns or vases, and any items that have pride of place in your collection.

A majestic mirror or fine painting over the mantel brings balance to the wall space above the fireplace. Fresh flowers are always inviting and fit into any arrangement with natural ease.

Although lighting always has been important, we are thinking more now about its versatility and decorative power. A funky chandelier or streamlined arched floor lamp will capture your eye in delightful ways.

The flexibility of dimmers gives you the power to adjust light according to the mood, be it dramatic, playful or practical.

Antique lamps, custom shades and decorative trim are worth the search if this is your taste. Age old elegance is never out of fashion.

When you have decorated and accessorized any room in your home, you should feel as Olivia does, that it is a comfortable and safe place to explore, dream, play and share.
